“The last piece to complete the puzzle”
ModulAct is a project that seeks to transform the festival process, making it more environmentally and economically sustainable with the help of the lead partner ABR (Alternative Brains Rule) from Cyprus, L.O.F (Lug Open Factory) from Spain and finally MJČ (Metalska Jazgra Cakovec) from Croatia. At festivals held over the last decade, ModulAct has identified the importance of sustainable collaborations and infrastructure. Initially, festivals had a significant negative impact on the environment, with attendees leaving behind a large amount of waste, including bottles, cans, food packaging, tents, and clothing. Moreover, large festivals consume substantial amounts of energy to power stages, lights, sound systems, catering spaces, and freezers.
In addition the main pillar of this project, is to conduct a series of activities that are not a hurdle for the environment but rather showcase a new sustainable method to conduct cultural happenings.
The project also aims to promote innovation and collaboration by bringing together interdisciplinary and transnational teams. Besides, to aim to create a new global festival experience through experimentation and the development of new practices. The main objectives include the creation of energy-efficient devices, reducing the environmental impact of festivals, and establishing sustainable economic and ecological methodologies. Despite its cultural significance, the festival faces challenges such as waste management, energy consumption, and transportation. ModulAct introduced some solutions like reusable cups and a pedal-powered battery, but they aren’t sufficient to meet the power needs. Additionally, the festival generates plastic waste with limited recycling options, and transportation consumes non-renewable energy sources.
To achieve sustainability and innovation in the festival, ModulAct propose three key strategies. First, emphasize educating the audience about the principles of reuse, reduction, and recycling, with a specific focus on using recycled plastic products. This promotes responsible consumption and waste management to reduce the festival’s environmental impact. Second, to suggest using renewable energy sources to power the event. Lastly, to recommend creating modules and joints that allow for material reuse, promoting a circular economy where materials are repurposed and waste is minimized. These strategies aim to make the festival more environmentally friendly and pave the way for a greener future.
